The rollout of the regional Watts Working Better project has seen the Shire of Campaspe in northern Victoria change over 1,833 old mercury vapour lights to energy efficient alternatives. In 2012, the Municipal Association of Victoria set up a street lighting materials tender panel to leverage the combined purchasing power of councils undertaking energy efficient street lighting changeovers. The panel has already seen councils save hundreds of thousands of dollars on purchasing lights and thousands of hours evaluating tenders. The panel is refreshed when prices or new technology is approved - such as LED lighting. What's more it is now open to every council in the state.
