Ironbark are again joining forces with local government associations to assist councils with upgrading their street lights. Now that many councils have all but completed the upgrade of old inefficient lights to LEDs on minor roads, it’s onto main roads, smarter technology, more market contestability, more council control and an expansion interstate. The MAV-LGAT Smart Lighting Program Mark II will again offer councils the opportunity to purchase LEDs directly from a standing panel of lighting...

It's a special moment for councils around Australia with the 500,000th energy efficient street light installed. Light number 500,000 was installed in the City of Campbelltown in the north-east suburbs of Adelaide, which is fitting given the pace of change and number of LEDs now being installed throughout South Australia due to co-operation between Councils and SA Power Networks, which manages and maintains about 200,000 street lights on behalf of councils and the state government.

Big changes have been announced for South Australian street lighting with the Australian Energy Regulator (AER) confirming that public lighting services in the state will now be regulated and classified as Alternative Control Services (ACS). This a good outcome and will provide a lot more certainty for SA councils, who have clearly suffered through a lack of bargaining power and less control over tariff increase. Ironbark's Paul Brown presented at the WA Local Government (WALGA) Convention in August 2018. The session provided information on what capabilities and capacity currently exists for councils to install and operate their own street lighting and related infrastructure. Things are poised for movement over the next year or so as WA councils and Western Power talk turkey on LED street lighting. We've got LEDs and new tariffs in the wings and some great projects from Esperance and Joondulup which...

Well it’s been a big big big few months in South Australian street lighting. We’ve had a few LED projects start and some of the larger ones like Onkaparinga wrap-up (ahead of time!). In the last few weeks alone the Cities of Unley and Campbelltown have both resolved to changeover to LEDs through the PLC tariff. We’ve got a likely regulatory change to street lighting from NDS and ACS. And of course, the LGA have announced that they are no longer progressing on their bid to establish a public...

Every single successful project in Australia has been the result of cooperative dialogue and relationships between councils, DNSPs and other key stakeholders. We know that collaboration works. We know that arguing doesn’t. Which brings us onto...
